FIRELANDS REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER
1101 Decatur Street
Sandusky, OH 44870
President & CEO: Chuck Stark
Firelands Regional Medical Center (formerly Firelands Community Hospital), situated close to the waterfront of Lake Erie in the City of Sandusky, has a history rich with a tradition of providing the finest healthcare services available to its community.
Its history began with the laying of the cornerstone for the former Good Samaritan Hospital on June 27, 1876. The former Sandusky Memorial Hospital began in 1933 when several area physicians saw the need for an institution dedicated to osteopathic medicine. And, on September 1, 2001, Firelands became the official owner of the former Providence Hospital, the only other hospital
provider in the county. Providence Hospital was founded in 1902 by the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine based in Cleveland. In 1923, the Diocesan boundaries were redrawn; making Sandusky part of the Toledo Diocese and sponsorship assumed by the Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania, Ohio.
The consolidation of these three fine local hospitals into what is now known as Firelands Regional Medical Center occurred when hospital board and administrative leaders looked toward a more effective and efficient means of providing healthcare to the community. This blend of allopathic and osteopathic professions, religious-cultural awareness, along with a full-service base lends itself to a unique and comprehensive 500+ bed healthcare system in north central Ohio. Its combined medical staff represents approximately 160 physicians with 86% achieving board certification and a hospital staff of approximately 1,700 full and part-time employees. Its Board of Directors is represented by a cross-section of talent involving leaders within the community, local business and industry.
Firelands Regional Medical Center, Main Campus, provides acute care services and many specialties and subspecialties. This facility houses a state-of-the-art Emergency Medicine and Outpatient Department, Heart Institute, Intensive Care Unit/Coronary Care Unit (ICU/CCU), Psychiatric, Dialysis Service, as well as Obstetric, Pediatric and Oncology services in addition to an extensive inpatient Chemical Dependency program for both adults and adolescents. The Firelands Regional Medical Center, South Campus provides general acute care services, Skilled Nursing, Dialysis, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and the School of Nursing. Firelands also offers a broad-based outpatient community mental health and chemical dependency program for Erie and Ottawa County residents with off-site locations also in Seneca, Sandusky, Wyandot, and Huron Counties. The newly constructed Firelands Professional Center that adjoins the main campus houses the Hospital’s Dialysis Service and several physician offices. Firelands just completed a construction program that offers cardiac catheterization and open-heart surgical services to the community as well as expansion of obstetric and surgical capabilities.
Firelands continues to experience a strong and favorable financial performance. The Hospital’s emergency and outpatient center experienced 37,451 and 341,632 visits, respectfully, during 2001.
As a result of a visionary board and energetic and highly motivated management team along with the full cooperation of the medical staff, Firelands has attained the highest in hospital accreditations and received the ultimate in survey outcomes for hospital services and its medical education program as well. It has also received multiple bond upgrades since its inception in 1985 from the bond rating agencies of Standard & Poors and Moody’s Investors as a result of its continued strong performance levels.
