Hospital Council of Northwest Ohio

NW Ohio Regional Extension Center

The Northwest Ohio Regional Extension Center (NWOREC) is a program made possible through a Federal grant from the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC), Department of Health and Human Services, and was funded through ARRA, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. NWOREC was originally one of 7 Regional Partners in Ohio designated by the Ohio Health Information Partnership (OHIP) to offer Electronic Health Record (EHR)-related services to physicians in their regions.  For Northwest Ohio, this region was comprised of 14 counties including:

Ohio Counties

What is NWOREC?

Since 2010, NWOREC has served and will continue to serve as a support and resource center for our region making the implementation or upgrade of EHRs easier for providers throughout the process. Though the federal grant officially ended in February 2014, NWOREC was one of two Regional Partners selected to continue to work with OHIP for an additional year during an extension of services which was approved by the Office of the National Coordinator.

What Services Does NWOREC Provide?

NWOREC services continue to include workflow assessment, EHR vendor selection, assistance with implementation and “go live,” especially for late adopters.  However, our main focus currently is assisting providers to achieve Stage One Meaningful Use and also to serve as a resource for ICD-10 implementation for our eligible Primary Care partners.  We will continue to offer participating practices our core service including:

  • EHR implementation and project management
  • HIT education and training
  • Vendor selection & financial consultation
  • Practice/workflow redesign
  • Privacy and security
  • Partnering with state and national health information exchange (HIE)
  • Ongoing technical assistance
  • ICD-10 awareness education
